Analysis of the Wild Horse Count & Population Trends

Presented at the first Preserving Alberta's Wild Horses Symposium

    Cochrane, AB, June 1 2018

The presentation provided an analysis of the Government of Alberta aerial count data and population trends.

  • Alberta Government count data has been acquired using inconsistent methods and should not be used to interpret population growth trends

  • increased helicopter budget = more horses

  • Forestry and other industries are creating large areas of new wild horse habitat and should accept responsibility for the spread of the horses

  • increased logging = more horses

  • Recognizing that the migration of wild horses into newly created habitat is the result of industrial activities should fundamentally change the way the Government of Alberta approaches the management of the horses.

  • Those industries changing the landscape MUST be responsible for providing or funding humane management solutions and should not be demanding removals and culls.
